Replacing old windows and doors is one of the most effective ways to improve your home’s comfort and energy efficiency, especially for Quebec homeowners facing cold winters and major temperature swings. If you are planning a window or door replacement project in 2026, the Rénoclimat program remains the main government grant available in Quebec for this type of renovation. This guide explains how the Rénoclimat program works, what qualifies for window and door replacement, and what homeowners need to know before starting any work.
What Is the Rénoclimat Program?
Rénoclimat is a Quebec government program designed to help homeowners improve the overall energy performance of their homes. The program evaluates how the home performs as a complete system rather than focusing only on individual products. Financial assistance may be granted when eligible improvements are completed, including the replacement of ENERGY STAR® certified windows and exterior doors installed in existing openings.
How Much Is the Rénoclimat Grant for Windows and Doors in 2026?
As of 2026, Rénoclimat offers $150 per existing rough opening replaced with an ENERGY STAR® certified window or exterior door.
Only full replacements qualify. Glass-only, sash-only, or door slab replacements are not eligible.
For example, bay or bow windows count as one opening:

What types of windows, patio doors and exterior doors qualify ?
To be eligible under Quebec’s Rénoclimat program, windows, patio doors, and exterior doors must be ENERGY STAR® certified

To qualify as ENERGY STAR®, windows, sliding glass doors (patio doors) and hinged doors (with or without sidelites or transoms) must meet one of the following performance criteria:
· A U-factor of 1.22 W/m2K (0.21 Btu/h·ft.2·°F) or lower
OR
· An Energy Rating (ER) of 34 or higher

Required Steps for Eligibility
To qualify for financial assistance under the Rénoclimat program, the process must begin before replacing your windows or doors.
Step 1: Pre-retrofit energy evaluation
A pre-retrofit energy evaluation must be completed first. This evaluation establishes your home’s baseline energy performance and officially opens your Rénoclimat file.
Step 2: Window and door replacement
Once the pre-retrofit evaluation is completed, you may proceed with replacing your windows and doors using ENERGY STAR® certified products, installed in existing openings.
Step 3: Post-retrofit energy evaluation
After the replacement is complete, a post-retrofit energy evaluation is required. This evaluation confirms the completed work and verifies that your home’s EnerGuide energy rating (cote) has improved, which is necessary to qualify for financial assistance.
To help you understand the full process at a glance, we have included the official Rénoclimat overview document below, which outlines each step from start to finish:

Quick FAQ
Can I enlarge a window and still qualify?
No. Enlarging or reducing window or door openings does not qualify under Rénoclimat.
Do patio doors qualify?
Yes, if they are ENERGY STAR® certified and replaced in an existing opening.
Do I need to replace all my windows at once?
No. Partial replacement is allowed, as long as the upgrade results in a measurable improvement in energy performance.
Can I replace my windows and doors in phases?
Yes. You may participate in Rénoclimat again in the future, provided the program is still running and each phase follows the required evaluation process.
Is ENERGY STAR® certification enough on its own?
No. The replacement must lead to an improvement in your home’s EnerGuide rating to qualify for financial assistance.
